How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT Test

The annual MOT test is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old in the UK, ensuring they meet road safety and environmental standards. While the thought of an MOT can be stressful for many drivers in Bournemouth, a little preparation goes a long way. Surprisingly, nearly a third of all initial MOT failures are due to minor, easily avoidable issues like blown bulbs or worn wiper blades.

One of the simplest checks you can perform at home is inspecting your vehicle's lights. Turn on all your lights—including headlights, indicators, brake lights, and the often-forgotten number plate lights—and walk around the car. Ask a friend or family member to help you check the brake lights and reverse lights. Replacing a simple bulb before your test can save you the hassle of a failure.

Tyres and visibility are another major cause for concern. Ensure your tyres have at least the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. You should also check the tyre pressures and look for any cuts or bulges on the sidewalls. Similarly, check that your windscreen wipers clear the screen effectively without leaving smears, and ensure your screenwash reservoir is topped up.

Don't forget to check under the bonnet for basic fluid levels. Ensure your engine oil and engine coolant are between the minimum and maximum marks. Also, take a moment to look at your dashboard when you start the car. If any warning lights remain illuminated, such as the engine management light or ABS light, this will likely result in an automatic MOT failure and needs to be addressed beforehand.
